You Don’t Even Know My Name
24” x 19” graphite on paper, signed Pamela Watson (2020)
You Don’t Even Know My Name is a powerful and contemplative graphite drawing created as part of Pamela Watson’s nine-piece series completed during the 2020 pandemic. Each drawing in the series served as a visual prayer, shaped through a meditative process and grounded in the artist’s deep concern for social justice.
This particular piece was inspired by the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests and the ongoing realities of systemic racism and redlining. Pamela explored these complex issues through the image of Habu, her pit bull, whose breed often faces housing restrictions and citywide bans. During her time living in Colorado, Pamela experienced firsthand how these limitations shaped where she could live with her dog—an experience that echoed broader themes of exclusion and discrimination.
Through You Don’t Even Know My Name, Pamela reflects on the ways society too often makes assumptions based on appearance or fear, without understanding the individual beneath the label. The result is a quiet yet compelling call to empathy, awareness, and change—rendered in stunning detail with graphite on paper.
