Bully
21.5” x 14.5” graphite on paper, signed Pamela Watson (2020)
Bully is a striking graphite drawing that blends raw power with quiet reflection. Originally begun in 2016 during Pamela Watson’s time in Colorado, the piece was set aside for several years—both due to the intense focus it required and the emotional weight of its subject.
The bull, photographed by the artist at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming, was one of the rodeo bulls slated to be ridden later that day. He became a powerful symbol in a broader meditation on strength, control, and the experience of being targeted—both online and off. Pamela returned to Bully after completing Ravin, using the drawing process as a form of prayer and grounding in response to the online bullying she observed and experienced. Stepping back from social media, she turned to her art as a way to process and protect her peace.
Like many of her detailed graphite works, Bully is the result of slow, intentional observation and emotional clarity. The final image captures both the threat and dignity of its subject, making a powerful statement about resilience in the face of intimidation.
