The Most Important Thing
19” x 24” Graphite on Paper | Signed Pamela Watson, 2020
Part of a deeply personal 9-piece drawing series created during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Most Important Thing reflects artist Pamela Watson’s response to the complex emotions of that time. Using drawing as a meditative prayer practice, she explored issues that weighed heavily on her heart—this one inspired by the reopening of schools.
Rendered in soft, contemplative graphite, the image of a young fawn evokes both innocence and vulnerability. Pamela was moved by concern for her son-in-law, a teacher, and for the students being put at risk. The decision to resume in-person education also marked a turning point in her personal life: due to increased exposure, she could no longer freely visit her daughter and young grandson.
The fawn, with its wide eyes and quiet stance, draws subtle but powerful parallels to Bambi—the cultural symbol of childhood loss. In this context, it becomes a metaphor for the virus’s silent reach, leaving broken families and orphaned futures in its wake.
The Most Important Thing is not just a drawing—it’s a quiet act of protest, protection, and prayer.
