Long Recess
29” x 19” • Watercolor on Paper • Pamela Watson
Long Recess is a deeply nostalgic watercolor capturing the quiet dignity of a one-room schoolhouse nestled in a rural Indiana field. Painted with sensitivity and a deep connection to place, the schoolhouse stood just down the road from the artist’s home while she was raising her children. Though weathered with time—its red bricks missing in places—the building still holds an elegance that speaks to generations past.
Set in a wide-open field shared by a small herd of dairy cows, the scene evokes the calm of a warm afternoon. Most of the cows are resting, undisturbed, as if enjoying a long recess of their own. The composition is spacious and airy, filled with the soft light and open sky of the Midwestern landscape.
This award-winning painting was featured in a solo exhibition and remains one of Pamela Watson’s most heartfelt tributes to rural life. Long Recess invites viewers to pause, reflect, and remember the beauty of simple places and the stories they carry.
