Description
Squirrelly
24” x 19” • Graphite on Paper • Signed Pamela Watson (2020)
Squirrelly is the final piece in Pamela Watson’s emotionally charged series of pandemic drawings, created during one of the most uncertain times in recent history. Rendered in rich graphite on paper, this 24” x 19” drawing features a single squirrel—poised, alert, and slightly tense—looking off toward the left, its shadow cast directly toward the viewer.
Created in 2020, this work is more than a portrait of a wild animal; it’s a raw visual metaphor for the artist’s own experience with anxiety and overstimulation amid the chaos of the world. Pamela describes feeling like a squirrel in the middle of a highway—frozen between directions, trying to make sense of constant noise and incoming threats.
The subtle play of light and shadow, the carefully observed texture of fur, and the vulnerable stance of the squirrel combine to create a powerful, relatable image of tension, survival, and awareness.
Squirrelly resonates with anyone who has felt overwhelmed but alert, uncertain yet deeply aware. A standout piece for collectors of introspective or narrative-driven contemporary drawing.
