More Than A Number
8” x 8” • Graphite on Paper • Signed Pamela Watson
More Than A Number is a quiet yet piercing meditation on the human cost hidden behind daily headlines. Created during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, this 8” x 8” graphite drawing serves as both a prayer and a protest—calling us to remember that every statistic represents a life, a story, a person worthy of compassion.
The drawing features a market lamb with numbered tags in its ears—a haunting metaphor for how easily we detach from suffering when identities are reduced to data. The image evokes the stark contrast between naming something and numbering it: a lamb with a name is harder to send to slaughter; a person with a face is harder to ignore.
In a time when pandemic tallies flooded the news with faceless figures, this drawing asks us to slow down and see again. It’s a call to resist desensitization and reclaim our humanity.
Now, in 2025, the message feels as urgent as ever. More Than A Number is a poignant reminder to look beyond the count—and see the soul.
A meaningful piece for collectors of socially engaged art, pandemic-era reflections, and emotionally charged works in graphite.
