Finn’s Gone Fishing
The Marsh Life of a Great Egret
20 × 16 inches | Acrylic on canvas
A quiet marsh. Soft light. A Great Egret completely absorbed in the search for its next meal.
Finn’s Gone Fishing began with a photograph I took during an afternoon at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Ohio. I had been photographing egrets, herons, geese, and other birds when this particular moment caught my attention. The light, the peaceful marsh, and the graceful presence of the egret seemed to come together perfectly. I knew as soon as I pressed the shutter that I wanted to paint it.
The finished painting is less about documenting a bird than capturing the feeling of that moment—a fleeting encounter with a wild creature that allowed me into its world for just a little while.
Finn may have been busy fishing, but for me, the real gift was simply being there.
The playful title adds a little personality to an otherwise quiet painting, inviting you to imagine the small, ordinary life happening beyond the frame.
20 × 16 inches, original acrylic painting on canvas.
A peaceful piece for anyone who loves birds, wetlands, wildlife, or those unexpected moments in nature when everything seems to line up just right.
