Kelly’s Song: A Catbird’s Life in the Swamp
Acrylic on Canvas | 20″ x 16″
Some paintings begin with a planned subject. Others arrive through curiosity, observation, and a moment of connection. Kelly’s Song: A Catbird’s Life in the Swamp is one of those paintings.
This work was inspired by a morning spent deep within Frinzel Swamp near Frostburg, Maryland, where the landscape was transformed by fog and the lingering haze of distant wildfire smoke. In that quiet, softened world, the gray catbird announced its presence through song before it was fully revealed.
Rather than simply capturing the appearance of a bird, this painting seeks to capture an experience—the feeling of standing within a living landscape and listening.
The branching forms became more than tree limbs. They became lines of music, carrying the rhythm and movement of the catbird’s song. The bird becomes both subject and storyteller, reminding us that landscapes are not only seen; they are heard, felt, and remembered.
The title, Kelly’s Song, honors the individuality and mystery of this adaptable migratory bird. Like the catbird itself, the name Kelly crosses boundaries and expectations, reflecting the artist’s interest in the ways identity, movement, and belonging exist beyond simple categories.
This painting marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pamela Watson’s ongoing project, Beyond Borders: Refuges in Motion, exploring migration, habitat, refuge, and the connections between species and the places they call home.
A unique original acrylic painting on canvas, Kelly’s Song: A Catbird’s Life in the Swamp invites you to bring home a moment of quiet wilderness—a reminder that even familiar places hold stories waiting to be heard.
