Held in Still Water
16″ x 20″ Acrylic on Canvas
by Pamela Watson

A Great Blue Heron stands quietly on a rock, surrounded by calm water and a field of layered greens. Backlit by soft light, the bird is both defined and transformed—its edges softened, its presence steady and intentional.

This piece began with a moment of observation during a painting event in Zionsville, Indiana, where the artist captured her first successful photograph of a heron. What started as an external study gradually became something more introspective.

The solitary stance of the bird—poised, focused, self-reliant—mirrors the internal landscape of sustained creative work. Long hours in the studio, working through complexity, often in solitude, are reflected in the quiet strength of the subject.

The background acts as more than setting; it becomes a space of containment and calm. The greens hold the composition, while the backlighting introduces a sense of stillness that shifts the narrative from isolation to presence.

Part of the ongoing series Between Here and Elsewhere, this painting explores themes of migration, survival, and the relationship between individual experience and the environments that sustain it.
