Reflections Have Their Way is a mysterious, atmospheric painting born during the First Brush of Spring event in New Harmony, Indiana, in 2022. Drawn to the quiet drama of a flooded riverbank at sunrise, the artist set out to create a watercolor—but the piece had its own direction. As the morning light shifted and the reflections deepened, ink and pastel were added to complete the vision.

What might first appear as the sky is actually its mirror image—the painting is dominated by the river’s surface, with reflections making up the bottom three-quarters of the composition. Blues, greens, purples, and soft pinks blend into a moody and slightly surreal landscape, where trees blur and shapes soften in the shimmering water.

This piece blurs boundaries—between water and sky, between intention and spontaneity. It captures not only a place, but the experience of standing still as the day begins, watching the world slowly turn itself right side up.
