Painted on the spot during a 2017 cross-country road trip, Motel Sunset captures a fleeting and unforgettable moment from the heartland of America. The artist had pulled into a modest one-level roadside motel—each room with a door opening to the parking lot—when the sky erupted into color. Compelled by the view, she quickly reached for her watercolors to capture the scene before it slipped away.

The sky dominates the composition with deep purples and blues, while a brilliant band of yellow light breaks through at the horizon. The land below is cloaked in dark green, and the tree line is silhouetted in near-black—punctuated by just a few tucked-away buildings, nestled quietly among the trees. The overall effect is atmospheric, honest, and full of the sense of being on the road, between destinations, catching beauty in unexpected places.
