Painted on New Year’s Day morning in Holland, Michigan, Winter Watch captures the moody calm that follows a fresh snowfall. While house-sitting in the area for the month of January, the artist ventured out to see the town’s iconic lighthouse just as the post-storm light began to break through.

One side of the red lighthouse glows where the sun touches it, washing the color into soft hues of pink and yellow, while the sky behind it remains a stormy gray-purple. The still water below mirrors both sky and structure, adding to the painting’s sense of quiet and reflection.
