Lanier Legacy
21” x 14” • Watercolor on Paper • Pamela Watson
Lanier Legacy captures the iconic Lanier Mansion in Madison, Indiana, a place of both architectural beauty and rich historical significance. Painted in the studio following an initial plein air study completed during an IPAPA event, this watercolor reflects the artist’s deep personal connection to the site—shaped in part by her undergraduate research as a history major at nearby Hanover College.
Rendered in a luminous pastel orange, the mansion’s facade stands out vividly against the bright greens of the surrounding landscape. The color choice is a nod to Pamela’s study of the Lanier family, who once played a vital role in banking and supported the Union during the Civil War. Their story, like the home they left behind, remains a striking piece of Indiana’s cultural heritage.
In Lanier Legacy, Pamela combines her love of history and painting to honor a structure that has stood the test of time—graceful, grounded, and glowing with memory.
