Description
Portland Head Lighthouse
29” x 19” • Watercolor on Paper • Pamela Watson
This large-scale watercolor captures the iconic Portland Head Lighthouse in Maine, illuminated by the vivid hues of a dramatic coastal sunset. Painted in jewel-like tones of deep reds, lush greens, and glowing golds, the work is both a personal and visual landmark for the artist.
Pamela Watson first traveled to Maine under difficult circumstances—to assist her father and stepmother during a medical emergency while they were vacationing. It was her first visit to the state, and despite the challenges, she found herself profoundly moved by the rugged beauty of the coastline. Combining on-site plein air sketches with photo references taken during that trip, she created this powerful and atmospheric piece.
The lighthouse stands tall and steady, its red-roofed keeper’s house nestled beneath it, while the sky blazes behind—symbolizing both guidance and resilience. Portland Head Lighthouse is more than a coastal scene; it is a reflection on caretaking, memory, and the strength found in moments of transition.
This statement piece is ideal for collectors who are drawn to lighthouses, coastal landscapes, or emotionally layered storytelling through watercolor.
