Beyond Borders:Refuges in Motion begins in the field. I travel, observe, photograph, and research the birds and habitats I encounter, allowing those experiences to shape the paintings and the questions behind them. Field Notes offers a glimpse into that ongoing process- featured species, observations, photographs, and discoveries gathered along the way. The project is continually developing, and so are the questions.

The Field Record
These figures reflect the ongoing fieldwork behind Beyond Borders: Refuges in Motion—documenting the species, places, and encounters that inform the project as it develops. The record is updated regularly as new observations are added.
Bird of the month
Gray Catbird Dumetella carolinensis
I finally found the Gray Catbird I had been looking for in a swamp in western Maryland. It was the first bird I painted when I returned from my month-long journey. Although I know it wasn’t the same catbird that had eluded me during my travels, the species has continued to appear around me in Maryland, becoming an unexpected thread running through Beyond Borders: Refuges in Motion.
